The stakes have been raised for Friday's Pick 6 on York's evening card. There is now GB£ 10,000 to win for choosing the six winners.
It would be good to still be in the contest after the first race but it looks a tricky card, certainly more so than Sandown and Catterick earlier in the week.

Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival - Pick 6
On the face of it three winners, two second-places and a third looks like an excellent tipping performance on a single card. But the reality is there were barely any runners and our three winners were returned at 2/5, 1/6 and 2/1. On top of this, one of our runners-up was an 8/13 shot.
We are at least continuing our trend of have more winners each day.
There were apparently 50 players who picked all six winners on Wednesday but no-one got the tie-break winning distance spot on (3.5 lengths).
Curiously, the daily Pick 6 contest, as part of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, involves the Thursday card at Sandown Park, which is not in Yorkshire, rather the meeting at Doncaster, which is in Yorkshire.

Eyes open for Festival clues
In seven weeks the Gold Cup will have been run and the Cheltenham Festival will be over for another year. The racing that takes place this weekend could provide a very useful guide as to the likely 2014 Festival winners.
Big Buck’s returns to action in the Cleeve Hurdle (3.35 Cheltenham). Paul Nicholls’ gelding is now 11 years old and was last seen on the track in December 2012. Ruby Walsh has been in the saddle for Big Buck’s’ last eight wins, so Sam Twiston-Davies has a lot to live up to.
At Fishers Cross is also in the race, looking to get his season going after unseating Tony McCoy last time in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot. The winner that day, Reve de Sivola, lines up for trainer Nick Williams. Willie Mullins sends over Boston Bob, who fell at the last fence in the RSA Chase at last year’s Cheltenham Festival.
The Argento Chase (2.25 Cheltenham) is another hotly anticipated race on the Cheltenham card. The runner up in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury, Rocky Creek (Paul Nicholls), is the favourite and faces Houblon Des Obeaux (6th in the Hennessy but with two other wins this season) and Charlie Hall Chase winner Harry Topper.
At Doncaster the card features the Sky Bet Chase and the Grade 2 River Don Novices’ Hurdle.
Paul Nicholls’ Unioniste heads the betting for the Sky Bet Chase and carries top weight. But there could be some threats lower down the weights, such as Niceonefrankie (Venetia Williams) and Night In Milan (Keith Reveley).

Choosing an online betting account
The UK has one of the most competitive internet betting sectors in the world. This means that UK customers are spoilt for choice when it comes to opening an internet betting account.
The only factors that come into the reckoning when choosing an internet bookmaker are trust and security. Do you trust the particular operator to look after the funds you deposit, pay you out when you win, and will they still be in business for the near future (three years at the very least)? All other considerations are secondary.
At present the majority of internet betting brands, with the exception of Bet365, are not actually regulated in the UK by the Gambling Commission. Instead most firms are located offshore in jurisdictions like Gibraltar (e.g. Ladbrokes, William Hill, Betfair, Coral, Stan James), Alderney (Skybet), and the Isle of Man (Paddy Power). As such, if you have a complaint or dispute with your bookmaker it is to the regulators of these jurisdictions that you must complain.
It is also worth checking if your chosen betting firm is a member of the Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS). IBAS acts as a mediation service between bookies and gamblers in the event of a dispute over a bet. It is an invaluable service.
The situation as regards regulation of internet betting is likely to change following the publication of a new gambling bill in the Queen’s Speech 2013. From late 2014 the new regulation will require all operators wishing to target UK customers to hold a licence issued by the UK Gambling Commission.
When choosing a bookmaker also bear in mind that they are not your friend. However amusing their Twitter feed or Facebook page, however generous they appear to be with their bonuses or cashback offers, do remember these are just marketing activities to induce you to place bets you didn’t really want to place and to give back your hard earned winnings.
Of course, you need to choose a bookmaker that offers the type of bets you usually place. If you make a number of each-way bets you might choose a website that offers slightly shorter odds but regularly offers an extra place for each-way betting purposes in the big races (not forgetting that this is still secondary to the most important consideration stated above).

The Un-dead Heat
Last month we drew attention to some of the tools and information available on the BHA's website www.britishhorseracing.com. One of the features we mentioned was the ability to review photo finishes and this tool came in very handy at the end of June.
The BHA has amended the result of a maiden stakes race at Kempton on 26 June 2013. The race was originally called a dead-heat by the judge between Extra Noble (Evens f) and Fire Fighting (16/1).
There was immediate disquiet among bettors about the result and BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey subsequently revealed that 'punter power' had resulted in the BHA requesting a high-resolution image of the finish in question.
"The British Horseracing Authority contacted the judge Mr David Smith and asked him to reconsider his original decision of a dead-heat for first place between Extra Noble and Fire Fighting in the £200 Free Bets At Betdaq Maiden Stakes at Kempton Park on 26th June 2013."
"After further consideration, within the time period laid down in Rule (B)62.2 of the Rules of Racing, Mr Smith agreed that the result was incorrect and that Extra Noble should be placed first and Fire Figthing second. The BHA confirmed the revised placings."
"When we heard there were concerns about the result we requested that [high-definition image] and got it. We looked at that."
It has subsequently transpired that Mr Smith has had his contract terminated by the BHA. A statement read:
"The British Horseracing Authority has established that Standard Operating Procedures were not followed, and has today informed Dave Smith that it has terminated its contract of services with him".
Following the amended result, Sky Bet, Stan James, Paddy Power and William Hill agreed to pay out on single bets on Extra Noble, who was declared the winner.

Racing Preview: Royal Ascot 2013
Royal Ascot 2013 begins with Animal Kingdom, winner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby and the 2013 Dubai World Cup, aiming for victory in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes.
Graham Motion’s 5-year-old is as short as even money for the contest, largely as a result of the lack of perceived serious competition amongst his rivals. Paddy Power is offering to pay money back on all losers if Animal Kingdom wins, so one way to play it would be to look for an each-way selection at bigger prices such as Elusive Kate (John Gosden) or Trade Storm (David Simcock). Under Paddy Power’s offer, if Animal Kingdom does win then the win part of the each-way bet will be refunded, whilst you would pick up the place bet winnings if the selection makes second or third place.
Shea Shea, trained by South African Mike De Kock, has travelled over for the King’s Stand Stakes after a successful spell at Meydan, Dubai earlier in the year. Kingsgate Native, Swiss Spirit, Reckless Abandon and Sole Power all contested the Temple Stakes at Haydock last month but the places could be reversed here.
Jim Bolger’s Dawn Approach is 6/4 favourite for the St James’s Palace Stakes as the colt goes back to a mile after his antics in the Epsom Derby last time. He had several of his rivals well behind him in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket – including Glory Awaits and Toronado – and his nearest rival in the betting, Magician, reportedly had a minor setback last week.

Bookies Fail National Stamina Test
Several online sports books experienced some serious technical issued with their websites as they struggled to cope with the surge in demand caused by the Aintree Grand National on Saturday.
Accounts with several online sports betting firms used by the authors of this blog all experienced some technical issues with both their websites and mobile apps at varying points during Saturday.
Some of the problems stated quite early in the afternoon, well before the Grand National itself.
The winner of the Grand National was the 66/1 outsider Auroras Encore trained by Sue Smith. Such a result may even have been a ‘skinner’* on some books.
It will be especially galling for the bookmakers not to have taken as much money as they could because of the technical difficulties. The fancied horses – Sea Bass, On His Own, Teaforthree – were all beaten, with only Teaforthree making the places.
On Twitter there were numerous posts by people complaining about a certain betting website and threatening to take their business elsewhere. It was a difficult threat to carry out because a number of leading betting websites experienced problems at different times.
The inquiries will begin on Monday when senior management returns to the office as to why the technical contingency plans failed to work. It might transpire that some sites were subjected to cyber attacks (though such attacks are rarely acknowledged publicly), although there is no evidence for such activity at present. But it is unusual for such a number of betting sites to suffer outages even on Grand National day. It could simply be that the betting platforms cannot cope with the Grand National day betting surge.
